Your House Can Smell Good Too
Do you ever stress about the smell of your living room or house? It is not like it is bad, but it is not as fresh or clean as it could be. Opening up the windows can help, but it is only a short-term solution. Our sense of smell is very sensitive, and our noses can detect even the slightest change in the air. And to be honest, no one likes to sit in a room that has a weird smell. So we decided to examine this topic thoroughly and gathered some helpful tips for you.
Top Suspects
First, you have to deal with all the potential sources of bad odor in your home, and here is a list of the most odor objects in households.
Mold
The biggest enemy of fresh and clean air, and the number one on the list of things that cause unpleasant smells – mold.
Use a hydrometer to check the levels of humidity in each room. If it is above 60%, you have likely found your source of the odor. You can try using dehumidifiers, or if you live in an area with a hot climate, avoid carpets because they can trap moisture. Also, pay attention to sponge and towels, change them frequently.
Stuff
Do you have any boxes, pet beds, or cans stored in your house? You may think they are not the cause, but that is just because you are used to that smell. For example, garbage cans can have an unpleasant odor even when you throw out the trash. It needs to be cleaned from the inside from time to time. Throw out the trash every day and scoop the litter box daily.
- Surface Dust and VOC Test – this is designed for the rapid collection of a wide range of airborne aerosols including mold spores, pollen, insect parts, skin cells, fibers, mineral dust, the biogenic and inorganic particles and opaque particles.
Fridge
It is time to inspect your fridge and check if there are any leftovers of expired foods. Sometimes we put something in the fridge, then pile other things in front, and completely forget about it until it starts to stink a bit too much. The fridge should also be washed thoroughly from the inside.
Soft Fabrics
Yes, plushy rugs and pillows look really good, but they can contain so much dust, dirt, moist, and they are magnets for bacteria. Just think about how many times you have spilled something, and then just wiped it off. Regular vacuuming and washing are a must.
What Can You Do to Enhance the Smell of Your Home
After you have checked all the above things, now it is time to work on improving the smell around you. Here are a few ideas on how to achieve that.
Strong Smells
Our first advice is to avoid strong scents. It will give you a headache, and your guests would not be pleasantly surprised by it. Our sense of smell is fast, so when people walk into your home, they will feel that strong smell, which is going to ruin their first impression. More subtle air aromas are always a better option. Nothing too sweet, or floral, better go with fresh and natural aromas.
Oil Diffusers
Not only that, they look like a beautiful piece of decoration, oil diffusers are also maintaining a dash of pleasant smell in your space. It is a subtle way to achieve a pleasant environment for the nose and they do not give of ash or soot.
Scented Candles
Many people adore scented candles and even burn a few of them at the same time. However, that is not something we recommend, you should not light more than two at the same time. Find a nice looking metal design candle holder and create a pleasant experience for all senses
NEUTRALIZERS
If you are not looking for any particular smell, you just want your home to be clean and odor-free, neutralizers are the best thing for you. They will neutralize the odor, but they will not add any artificial scents.
Windows
The good old way of opening a window to get in some fresh air. Opening a window can genuinely help your space to breathe a little bit, but only if it is already clean. Otherwise, it is only a short-term solution because, after a while, something is going to smell again. So you should definitely open your windows regularly, but also try to keep the house as clean as possible.
The Bottom Line
No one enjoys dusting, vacuuming, and cleaning around the house on a daily level, but only a clean home is a house that smells good. So before you go crazy with shopping different air fresheners and sprays, make sure you have thoroughly cleaned every corner of your home. Get rid of all the things that are just collecting dust and making a mess, and be regular with your cleaning. Because if you clean, let’s say once a week, you will never have too much work, because things cannot get too dirty in a few days. But if you neglect your house, and clean it once a month or rarer, then the cleaning will last longer, and it will be heavier.
